This programme is geared toward providing classroom and clinical experiences sufficient to ensure a competent graduate. To facilitate learning, materials, supplies and equipment are available in the classrooms and clinical laboratories.

Graduates of the Associate Degree in Health Sciences work across a wide range of industries — in health education, social work, health services management, medical technology, radiography, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, counselling, and as medical representatives.

The Associate Degree can be used as an entry level position within the allied health science profession. These jobs, as well as most other careers in the healthcare industry, require more extensive and focused training than an Associate Degree in Health Science program provides. Graduates often apply credits earned under Associate Degree in Health Science Programmes toward a bachelor degree in a medical or science field, while others obtain certifications to be a nurse, dental hygienist, medical technician or personal trainer.
Degree Programmes — Admission Requirements

Examinations and Grades

A minimum of five (5) subjects in one or a combination of the following certificates:

  1. Three General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) ‘O’ Levels at A, B or C.

  2. Three Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) General Proficiency Levels 1, 2 or 3, with grade 3 accepted as of June 1998.

  3. Three compulsory subject requirements (only two subjects at grade 3):

    • English Language or Communication Studies (CAPE)

    • Mathematics, Pure Mathematics (CAPE) or Applied Mathematics (CAPE)

    • Biology, Human and Social Biology, or Biology (CAPE)

  4. And two other subjects from the list of eligible subjects below.

Additional Requirements

  1. Have a school leaving certificate.

  2. Submit a medical certificate (physical, dental, ophthalmic).

  3. Be age 17 or over.

  4. Sit a pre-test administered by Sigma College of Nursing and Applied Sciences (where applicable).

  5. Attend an interview and satisfy the selection committee regarding suitability for entrance.

Mature Requirements

Where persons do not have the required subjects for entry, there are alternative requirements which allow for some flexibility:

  1. Individuals must have a minimum of five years’ experience in a field related to the specific programme. This includes skills which may be transferable (prior learning).

  2. Verification of the above is done by the organisation where this prior learning took place.

  3. Previous training in a related area is also applicable. This may be assessed by transcript from the training programme or organisation; relevant course credits may be applied.

  4. Professional qualifications may also be used as a requirement for entry.

  5. Candidates must sit a Challenge Examination to confirm their suitability for entrance to the programme.
